From Brassieres to Beethoven

October 21, 2009

I came to a realization last night that it has been at least five years since I have worn a dress.  This realization came to me after trying on my maid-of-honor dress last night for my sister’s wedding.   When I first put it on, I was thinking, “OMG, I look pregnant.”  Turns out that these homemade dress-type-things, well, they have to be fitted specifically to your body.  Also turns out that it looked pretty darn good once it had been done.

I’m getting pretty excited for the wedding, and also quite excited it has spurred some action into getting a few new bras.  Apparently I’m wearing the complete wrong size and have been for some time.  QoB measured me and bought a bra at JC Penney’s based off the measurements she took.  While it’s not perfect and still needs to be a bit larger around, it’s like night and day, the way the girls look and how comfortable it is.

I have always.always.always been a fan of the underwire bra.  I have this conception that it’s the only way my girls are going to look their best.  After wearing the bra that QoB picked out for me, however, I must say that non-underwire works pretty great, as well.

In non-bra-related news, I think I have found the perfect piano for the right price in a little town about 45 minutes West of here.  It’s a beautiful antique upright with carvings of ivy vines on the front and would fit in with my house perfectly:

Dr. Love and I are going to Wamego on Thursday night to check it out.  If I like it, I’ll start figuring out a way to get it here.  My first inclination is to hire a moving service, as this is going to be one seriously heavy piano.  It will all depend on how much that would cost.  One way or another, I’ll get it here.  I’m not so worried about that as if it will measure up to how it looks in the pictures.

It has been years and years since I have played the piano, but, as I’ve written in previous posts, it’s a hobby I would really like to get back into.  Hindsight being 20/20, I wish I would have stuck with it as a kid because, really, I was pretty good at it.  I also think it would be cool to have a piano so my someday children would have the opportunity to learn to play.  I don’t know if I ever thanked QoB for the endless trips out to Hermi’s for lessons, the recitals, or the like, but, Madre, you were always there to make it happen and that was a true gift to me.  I have many happy memories of my piano-playing days.

A song I can remember my mom playing over and over growing up.  One of the first major pieces I hope to learn.  Totally do-able.

One of my dearest favoritest blogs is Down and Out Chic.  Christina has a darling Etsy shop that features, you guessed it, homemade.jewelry.  I am a complete sucker for earrings and hairpins.  I mean, seriously, I can wear a new pair almost every day for three weeks and not have to repeat.  Lovely.

Through Down and Out Chic, I found the very fabulous blog, The Cottage Cheese, and she is doing a giveaway of Christina’s things.

My favorite pieces are all of the mum earrings and some of the hairpins.  A few of my favorite selections below:

Relaxed to the Max

August 31, 2009

Dr. Love and I have just returned from another absolutely glorious weekend at the lake.  We’re really becoming quite the campers.  We were much more organized this time, which made getting out there much less stressful.  That, and I was able to get off work earlier than expected on Friday.  The beauty of flexing out overtime — I suppose it does have some benefits, however few they may be.

The house is still wonderfully clean, spotless really.  It’s so nice to come home to a clean house.  Usually we would return from a camping trip and face a bunch of dishes, laundry, chaos.  This time we came home, threw the laundry down the stairs to the basement, and went off in search of the perfect weed eater.  And now, Dr. Love is infatuated with it and I am crossing my fingers that this means we will have an immaculate lawn from now on.  A girl can dream, right?

My dad’s birthday is on Tuesday.  My sister and I are taking him out to dinner tonight and I am giving him my favorite Bob Dylan CD, Tell Tale Signs: Bootleg Series 8.  It was done around the album Time Out of Mind, which is my second favorite Bob Dylan CD.  Oh, and let’s not forget his latest — Together Through Life.  I’m really a Bob Dylan freak, and if he ever has another concert remotely close to home, I’m totally going.

My Personal Path to Hot-ness

August 21, 2009
I’m on day 21 of no junk food.  Other than a small slip at Dairy Queen, with the Blizzard of the Month — it was Girl Scout Thin Mint — I’m not so good as to be able to pass THAT up, especially when it’s a limited time only type of deal.  Let’s just be thankful I have been able to keep my car from going on autopilot through Sonic or McDonalds, my two biggest vices, other than gas stations, where I can find all sorts of terrible things to eat.

And it makes me feel good, both mentally and physically.  I have even taken to measuring my food at home.  Last night I made a mean pot of spaghetti with Italian turkey sausage, and it was seriously amazing.  So seriously amazing that, usually, I would have eaten two helpings, thinking it was one.  But not last night — I measured and actually felt good about eating a healthy dinner with a small salad.

I am anxious, in a good way, to step onto the scale this week.  My clothes are already fitting better, and I have a lot more energy.  I started taking a new medication for sleep earlier this week, and it has made me sick a few times — has also made me not so hungry.  I don’t think that’s necessarily a good thing, to use it for weight loss, but it helps that it’s not one more medication that makes me eat everything in sight.  I don’t know if I will stay on it, though, because it’s not helping me sleep, which is the point, right?

It helps me sometimes, to find an outfit that I think is really cute that I can hang a dream on, so to speak, for once I have lost some weight.  I am really liking these shrugs from Lane Bryant:

So, these are some outfits/styles that I look forward to being able to wear, that I would be COMFORTABLE wearing when I lose some more weight.  And I have a ton of clothes in my closet, as well, that will fit after a little while and I will just be walking around so SUPER-HOT everywhere, that Dr. Love will have to start beating up every guy that tries to hit on me.  😀

Sacred Self Birthday

August 19, 2009

I recently celebrated my 28th birthday.  I thought it would make me feel OLD, being two years away from 30, but really, it was a beautiful birthday and I celebrated it all week (as I usually do, in true RosieSmrtie fashion).  I received some really amazing gifts from people I love.

I finally have a fire pit!  Terribly exciting — I really need to go pick it up from Queen of Biscuit’s house and get it home, set some stuff on fire, pronto.  And dearest Dr. Love gave me two absolutely darling bracelet watches…he couldn’t decide which to get me, so he bought both.  A man after my heart.  🙂  My little sis gave me an amazing blown-glass vase from World Market that is prominently displaying some sort of plant cutting on top of my fridge and the cutest “sisters” frame, that I have yet to find pictures for.

I couldn’t find pics of either of those gifts, because the fire pit is extremely unique (QoB found it at a garage sale) and really screams “ROOOOOSEEEEE!!” and Dr. Love bought the watches at Catherines, and they do not have all of their jewelry online.  I’d love to get a great pic of the vase with the cutting so that my sister could see it, but I’m not so great with the camera and Dr. Love is in bed (lucky dog).

Something I must pass on, though, is the (in my opinion) some of the best body wash and lotion that has come my way.  I receive this same gift every year from my dad and his wife, Karen.  I ration it out carefully throughout the year so that I never run out, even though I’m tempted to slather myself head-to-toe every day:

I generally get a large bottle of the lotion and the body wash, because I’m not much of a bar soap fan, but again, could not find pics of those.  You get the general idea though.  You can buy the individual lotion and body wash at many specialty stores, and can buy the gift set at ValueSphere.  If anyone else knows of a great place to buy it, do tell.  I could use it all up and buy more, in that case!!

There is also a local candle shop that I received seven oversized votives from, and they smell amazing.  I have them going throughout the house, such nice smells.  Marion Lane Candles is right here downtown and, besides having an awesome shop with some fun activities, they have the best candles I have ever had in a huge variety of scents.  Their online shop is fairly decent, if you don’t live here in the city, and I would highly recommend checking it out.  My favorite scent so far is the flower-pot cedar and saffron:

So, just some recommendations of yummy yummy yummy scents to check out.  Think I will go light the candle and put on some lotion before work — practicing a little sacred self before work can really help me maintain my sanity throughout the day!
